8:30-10:30AM
Today all books were due back to the media center for the Thanksgiving break. So it was packed in there! When I walked past, there were piles and stacks everywhere! So I stopped in to see if they could use any help! They of course said they could! The media clerk, two other paras, and I worked diligently for close to two hours before we finally got all the books where they belonged. There were books stacked on the checkout desk, carts, and pretty much everywhere you could find a space! One of the paras was constantly checking books in and putting them into a different stack to be organized and reshelved. The other para and I were picking through the stacks to get any books that belonged in the row for series. The media clerk was in the easy section with an overburdened cart putting them away and straightening shelves as quickly as she could. It seemed that every time we got through a stack another one appeared! After a while, the stacks finally started to shrink and by about 10:30, most of the books were where they belonged. I guess this is what it is like every time all books are due! I knew they were swamped during this time, but I never realized they were this swamped! Thank goodness for outside help!

9:30-10:30AM
This week is Children's Book Week, so the media center is the place to be! Today was our reading lock-in where students were allowed to wear their pajamas and were encouraged to read all day. Because of this, the media center was incredibly busy. I stopped by to get a couple books so I could read to a Kindergarten class and I could hardly see the media clerk behind all her piles. So I stayed to help reshelve books and get them caught up. I had never reshelved in the media center so I was a little unsure of their organization system, but caught on rather quickly. I took several of the series books and put them where they belonged. The students were incredibly helpful in the fact that if I couldn't find a series, they would tell me exactly where it was! After about an hour, they seemed to be caught up pretty well and had called in enough reinforcements that I felt like I could leave and not affect them too bad.

2:45-4:30PM
Today I had shortened hours in the media center since there was no after school program. I just kept the doors open for anyone searching for a book or needing to use the workroom. I had close to the same amount of people using the tools in the back room. I also had a couple questions about books and other resources. Since there were not a lot of people still at the school, I decided to close it early and go home.

Bradwell Institute

3:00-5:00PM
Today I went to work at Bradwell Institute to complete my weeding activity. The media specialist went through her rules of how she determines which books should be removed from the collection and which ones stay. She gave me the acronym "MUSTY" which I had learned in previous classes but had forgotten. So I took the acronym and the county policy on weeding and went to work on one section of the collection - the 600s. I checked the copyright dates of each and every book in this section and found that around half of them fit the criteria for removal. I asked the media specialist what process she follows to keep the collection full of resources for students to use and she told me that after she weeded one section like I just did, she would immediately go to Titlewave and put new books on a wishlist for future orders. This is how she manages to keep most of the sections current.

2:45-6:00PM
Today I worked in the media center again after hours. I invited the after school program to take advantage of the extended hours and they did! I had two classes in there the entire time until 4:30. I set up all the computers prior to the students arriving for Study Island. Each computer was logged on and had the program up and running so all they had to put in was their usernames and passwords. It made the process so much easier! They were actually able to be actively engaged for the entire 90 minutes they were there. I was glad to be able to help them in this way!
During this time, I also had the same handful of people using the laminator, ellison cutters, and paper cutters in the workroom. I also helped a couple teachers find books they were looking for. They got whatever information out of them that they needed and left.

Lewis Frasier Middle School

2:45-3:45PM
I went over to Lewis Frasier Middle School and worked in the media center today. I worked with the media specialist on inventory of one section. She taught me how to use the hand held scanner they have to help make the process easier and quicker. I took one shelf and started the inventory on it. When I finished that section, the program determined that we had 3 items missing. The media specialist looked to see what was missing and immediately identified the missing items as something she keeps in the professional section. So she went to get them, I scanned them, and reran the report. It them showed that all items were accounted for. It didn't take very long to do that small section, but I can imagine it would when having to scan the entire media center!

:45-4:45PM
Today I worked in the media center after hours. I actually stayed quite busy today. There was a baby shower in the media center, so I helped with that. I helped set up and clean up afterwards. When everyone left, I had a teacher come in and we discussed personal learning networks. I showed her the personal learning network I created for myself using netvibes and I also showed her the personal learning network I created for the school to help organize all of the websites that teachers use on a daily basis! We ended up discussing the benefits of this tool for quite some time. By the time I looked up, it was time to go!

Frank Long Elementary

2:45-6:00PM
I had extended media hours today and FINALLY, I was busy!! I asked my principal last week if I could offer the media hours to our after school program since there is a computer lab located in the MC and I thought it could benefit teachers to be able to allow all students to get on them at the same time instead of staggering (they only have 45 minutes). So I had one teacher who took advantage of that and brought her class in to work on Study Island activities. I worked with her to help get them all logged on with their usernames and passwords (who knew that could have been so difficult given that there were only 12 kids!) Then they worked on their reading pretest. By the time some of them got logged on, they only had about 10 minutes to complete the test, so there really was not more time to do much else, but I was glad to help them where I could! Next week, they will be back and I will definitely be more prepared and ready for them! I plan to have the computers already set up - logged on, Study Island up and running, and all they have to do is put in their username and password. That will cut out a lot of downtime!

After they left, I had several teachers come in for lamination and using the ellison cutters. This is a pretty typical activity during extended hours since they struggle to get it done during their planning periods. I also had one teacher come in a look for a book on how to make a pumpkin pie. This was for her daughter's research paper. We did not find anything, but I guess I won't always! :)

These hours went much faster than other days since I was so busy. I hope the rest of my hours are spent in this manner and I will be able to be a little more helpful to the staff!

Bradwell Institute

3:00-4:00PM
I went to Bradwell today for my hours and got to see a side of the media specialist's job that I was not accustomed to seeing. The media specialist was asked to create a map of the school for the class of 1989 with all the changes that have been made to the school since that time. Apparently it has gone under quite the remodeling process at least 3 times since then. This was quite the undertaking and she seemed to get frustrated about it at times, but in the end, it turned out great!
I also had several students and teachers take a SurveyMonkey survey for my facilities plan assignment in FRIT 7132. Also for this assignment, the media specialist found the blueprints for the media center and we measured the square footage of the space. I went around and took pictures for creating my version of the media center. Both of the media specialists were incredibly helpful! I also saw that there was a new display on the table - it is teen read week. So I looked through those books to see what kind of materials she put out on display. I also discussed the Helen Ruffin Reading Bowl books with her - especially "My Most Excellent Year" which was her favorite of the 20 books.

Lewis Frasier Middle School

2:45-3:45PM
When I went to the media center today, the county media specialist was there working with the students on learning the Home Connect program for Renaissance Place (AR). The media specialist completed a workshop for the teachers on this program several weeks ago, and they then signed their classes up in the media center for a lesson on this program. The students seemed to enjoy their time with the computers - taking tests, learning about their book level goals, and learning about their percent correct. I think it was a pretty eye-opening experience and I overheard several students getting their "aha" moments. Those students that met their point, book level, and percent correct goals were rewarded with a popcorn bag full of goodies.

2:45-4:45PM
I stayed after today for extended hours and the first part of my time was spent in the middle of a baby shower. Since it was the first day of the after school program, the baby shower was held in the media center. After that was all done and cleaned up, I spent time with a teacher showing her how netvibes.com works. We were discussing the benefits of the program and how it can be used to help teachers and students in different areas, like research, using appropriate sites, keeping ideas and resources organized, etc.

Bradwell Institute

3:00-4:00PM
I went to Bradwell today to work more hours. When I got there, the media specialist was working on Helen Ruffin Book Club books. We discussed this for a short time and we also discussed the push for blogs in the county. I thought it would be a good idea for the book club to use this tool by creating a blog post for each of the book bowl books and having participating students discuss the book through this blog. The MS thought it was also a good idea but did not have the desire to actually do this.
Since I am teaching my staff development unit at Bradwell, we also discussed my topic, which will cover PLNs. She had never heard of the term and was curious as to what exactly it involved. I showed her my personal netvibes account and the one I am creating for my school. She also told me that she got her issue of School Library Journal the same day I emailed her and the administration about the PLN staff development and in it, there is an article that has a quote highlighted about those media specialists who don't have a PLN, attend conferences, and read cutting edge articles are holding themselves and others back. I think this really upset her - the fact that she does not have a PLN and has no idea what it even was. When I showed her what it was, she thought it looked an awful lot like the website that was just created for her media center. I tried my best to explain the differences - which include being able to create different tabs for different topics, subscribe to various RSS feeds, and keep all web materials in one centralized location. I can't wait to teach this lesson and show the rest of the staff how valuable this site is.

Lewis Frasier Middle School

2:45-3:45PM
I worked at Lewis Frasier Middle School this afternoon until it closed. When I got in there, a class was using the media center finding books and taking AR tests. I went around and made sure none of the students needed any help and found one who was locked out of his AR. So I took him up to the circulation desk so that he could get it unlocked and take his test. I also helped with books as they were being brought back. I removed all the due date stickers and organized them on the return cart. After the bell rang and the students left, I shelved all the returned books in their correct location and straightened the shelves. Mrs. D. gave me some books to catalog, so I will enter those into the computer this evening.

2:45-5:15PM
I worked extended hours again tonight. There was typical traffic tonight: using the laminator, asking basic questions, and checking out the teacher book displays. I did have a teacher come in and ask me extensive questions about online graduate programs and I tried to help her through her questions. I know this is most likely not a typical media specialist question, but I was happy to help in any way I could!

Bradwell Institute

2:50-4:50PM
Today I went to work at Bradwell Institute again. When I got there, D. Clark was so excited to show me the new website that had just been created for the media center. I was just as excited to see it! There were quite a few different links that were added to make it more of a 24-hour library. Check out the site: http://www.liberty.k12.ga.us/BI/library_media_center.htm
Last time I was there, I was asking about different subscriptions and databases that they subscribed to and just as D. Clark went to pull up Webpath Express, she found out the hard way that the subscription had expired! So I asked her about that resource and it had been renewed, so I got a chance to see how that worked!
As I started asking questions about the different spaces within the media center (this will be the media center for my facilities plan in FRIT 7132), I found that there were three different storage spaces that I had not seen the last time I was there. I also found a dinosaur in the media world - a card catalog that still had the cards in it!!
Throughout this visit, I asked what seemed like a thousand questions about the operation of the media center in a high school. It is so completely different than an elementary school that I can't seem to ask enough questions to get all the answers that I want! Next time, I will work on cataloging some materials.

Reading Enjoyment Unit

10:30-11:15AM
Today I completed the last mini-lesson in my reading enjoyment unit. I worked with the students on maps of the United States and a map of Virginia. We discussed the geography of the particular area of Virginia where the book "Ghost Cadet" takes place. We reread in the first chapter where it details the topography of the land. We then looked at a map of Virginia and made an educated guess as to where the town was located. I challenged them to find out its exact location over the weekend. Several of the students did try to find its location but had a hard time. A couple got really close!
On the United States map, we discussed where to find Virginia in relation to the rest of the country. We also discussed the states that made up the Union forces and the states that made up the Confederate forces. The students then colored their maps to reflect this discussion. As they worked, a student brought up a question about the border states, so we then took some time to discuss those states and the difficulties they faced.

Richmond Hill Middle School

7:15-3:15PM
Today I went to Richmond Hill Middle School for the day. It was a pretty exciting experience for me. I learned a lot throughout the day about what the two media specialists do on a normal day. I got to see a new system for checking out and returning books (they use Sagebrush and Liberty County uses Destiny). I also got to see how another media center runs the paperwork part of their job. It was different from any other sysytem, but I liked it.
One of the things that I REALLY enjoyed seeing was how they decorated their media center. They have the most exciting displays - definitely something that piqued the interest of the students. One of the reasons it was so interesting is because they are very detailed displays about very obscure topics. For example, did you know that this month is national potato month? One of the displays was all about potatoes. It included facts printed on potato shaped paper, books about the topic, french fries made of wood, and Mr. Potatohead figurines. There were also displays about new books, happy birthday authors, Mexican heritage, pirates, and others. The media specialists change these every month to continue interesting students on different subjects.
Another great idea that I learned was about a book notebook. The media specialist went through the OPAC and searched for specific topics that students ask them about quite often and printed the results page for the topic. For example, the search topic might have been pirates and fiction. There might be a page or two of results that show fiction books about pirates. This printoff, along with others of numerous different topics, was placed in a binder for the media specialists to view and use as a collection reference when a student walked in and asked for a book about a specific topic. Some topics had one page, some had three. It was a very thorough list of topics - and one that I can definitely see the value in creating!
The media center overall is incredibly small. I was told that it met the square footage requirements for a student body of about 400. However, there are over 1200 students that attend RHMS. Their collection is over 20,000 items. They have arranged the media center in such a way that all the books fit, but barely. Some of the shelves were so full that when I went to shelf a book, I had to cram it in as best as I could. They know the shelves are this full, and had actually just gotten a new tall shelf to spread them out a little. However, it was not near enough shelf space to fix the entire problem. There is a new middle school being built that will apparently be much bigger and alleviate some of this problem. The amount of furniture and resources in the media center would make one think that it was overcrowded, but it was organized in a way that allowed movement and traffic flow in very logical ways. The one pitfall I think they ran into, however, was that there was no extra room for computer equipment. Because of this, there were only 3 computers in the media center that were for research and 2 computers used as look-up stations.
Overall, the day was an incredible learning experience. I enjoyed seeing their orientation process, viewing the website, and networking with people that have done what I want to do for a combined 55 years. I look forward to picking their brains about the job even further when I get the opportunity to move into the media center.

Frank Long Elementary

2:45-6:00PM
Today was my extended day in the media center. I think the teachers are getting used to the fact that the center is left open because there were more teachers that took advantage of it being open. I had several questions today about books, which was a first. One teacher came in to ask about "Diary of a Wimpy Kid". I looked it up and found that the media center does not carry this book. I was REALLY surprised about this since these books have been very popular in the past couple years. This wil be something I will bring to my media specialist's attention so hopefully she is able to order these books for the collection.
Several teachers also came in to use the laminator, paper cutters, and ellison machine. I also laminated some materials and cut them out for one teacher who was not able to stay. Hopefully I will be able to assist teachers more as time goes on and they get used to having the doors open longer.

Bradwell Institute

2:50-4:35PM
I went and worked at Bradwell Institute today. It was the first time I actually was able to put hours in there for a long time. When I walked in, I got right to work. There are several books and non-print items that need to be cataloged, so I will work on that until they are done. I also got a more thorough tour of the facility, a detailed floor plan, and a run-down of the schedule and other procedures. There were several students that were in the media center at the time working on the computer stations and there was a procedure for that that was explained to me. The students have computer cards that have barcodes that the students need to use and they are also required to sign in and out on a log.
One of the procedures that I am completely perplexed about, being that it is 2009 and a completely technological world, is that the media center still uses library cards to check out their books and other items. When I asked why they did this, she explained that the magnetic stickers were placed under the pockets, so instead of redoing all the books in a different manner, they just decided to continue to use the cards. The barcodes are placed on the cards instead of the actual books. I think this needs to be changed in the future in order to keep up with the technology and the times. However, I somewhat understand her reasoning for it.
The media center at Bradwell is incredibly spacious! That is one benefit to the center. I am going to use this space as my facility plan for FRIT 7132 and can't wait to really explore the space and create a vision for a completely different media center. With as much space as has been given to this center, I look forward to this assignment!

Reading Enjoyment Unit

I worked with the 5th grade class again today on the reading enjoyment unit. Today, I showed a short 15 minute video on the Civil War. Since "Ghost Cadet" is based on a soldier who died in the Civil War, I found this to be an appropriate video. It really seemed to pique the interest of the students. They really enjoyed the video, especially since they are also starting their study of the Civil War in Social Studies as well. This has been a wonderful connection that the students have been able to make and it really seems to be keeping them interesting and involved in the book. The students have also been working on the blog for this book. They really seem to love this assignment and the posts have been very interesting to read. I can't wait to continue on and see what the students have to say next!

Monthly report

Tonight I worked on my monthly report that I could turn in when I have a media job. In order to complete it to the best of my ability, I checked with the media calendar that has been set up for teachers. They use this calendar to sign up for times to visit the computer lab that is housed in the media center. They also state their research subject on the calendar.
I emailed my media specialist to get the information that is needed for this report. As soon as she has given me the information I will post a copy of the report.

Lewis Frasier Middle School

2:50-3:50PM
I worked in the Lewis Frasier Middle School media center this afternoon. I helped with checkout of books, stamping due dates, and shelving books after the students left. I also helped clean up after the students left for the day. Since a lot of my time so far has been after hours or during the summer, it was nice to work with the students. I also enjoyed seeing a different role the media specialist needs to have. There was apparently a mix-up with some technology that needed to be straightened out. The school won a grant for math laptops and then used funds from the budget to purchase more laptops for complete class sets. One of the math resource teachers got one of the laptops as well. However, she was given one of the laptops that was supposed to be a student laptop because of the grant wording. So her laptop had to be traded out for one of the media-purchased laptops. In order to make this all happen, the MS had to go through all the paperwork to determine which one could be given and then take some panel off the back and trade it out. She was quite flustered with this whole process, but the county media representative was there and walked her through it and even took care of the issue for her.

Reading Enjoyment Unit

I worked with Mr. Anderson's and Mrs. Wilson's class today on the start of my reading enrichment unit. I completed a book talk on the book "Ghost Cadet". I went into their classroom and discussed the title, overall topic of the Civil War, the main characters, and part of the plot. I then handed out the books and we read chapter 1 together. After we completed reading the chapter, I introduced the blog that will go along with this book. After each chapter, I plan to post questions to the site and have them answer the questions. I showed them the blog and discussed its importance. I also assigned each of them a number to use as their post so that their privacy is respected. I answered any questions that were asked to make sure there was an understanding of my expectations.

Frank Long Elementary

2:45-7:15PM
Tonight is open house at FLE so I decided to keep the media center, including the book fair, open the entire time after school and help my media specialist with the book fair during open house. After school, there were more teachers that took advantage of the media center being open since most of the teachers stayed after school because of open house. There were teachers who came to the book fair, used the work room, and asked questions about books.
During the open house, the book fair was incredibly busy! I am not sure how the media specialist would have been able to take care of all the business without a helper. I helped answer the parent's questions about different books, checked them out when they were ready to leave, and identified specific books to purchase. It was busy for the entire 1 1/2 hours of the open house and I was glad to help my MS with her job in this regard.

2:45-5:15PM
Today was another day with extended hours. It was pretty close to the same as the last couple times. I saw a few teachers come in and use the facitilies, but nothing that was different than the last couple times it was open late. However, I still feel that this is a very good use of my time. I think the teachers appreciate the fact that I keep the center open late. As they get used to having it open every Tuesday evening, they will most likely start using it more often. I am glad that I can offer this service and look forward to seeing more teachers take advantage of it!

Richmond Hill High School

7:15-3:15
Today I went to Richmond Hill High School to complete my hours in a high school. I worked with Annie Norton and Paula Wyatt throughout the day. When I arrived, I got a tour of the facility. It is an incredibly small facility for the size of the student body. There are 1600 students and it is smaller than my elementary school facility with only 600 students. It is about 1/3 the size of Bradwell Institute in Liberty County and BI only has about 200 more students. When I asked the two media specialists about this, they agreed that they should have more space and it is possibly in the plans when a new middle school is built. There is a middle school next to RHHS that will eventually be taken in as a part of the high school and another media center will be included in that part of the campus.
There were supposed to be classes come in all day to do research on the Salem Witch Trials, so Mrs. Wyatt had pulled books for this research project. She showed me that she has room on one set of shelves for teacher pulls. However, this teacher did not show up. He was not ready for his class to come in yet. There was another class that came in, though, and completed some independent research. The students took the laptops that were set out and went to their individual tables to look up whatever information they needed. They didn't need any assistance, resources, or extra materials.
Throughout the day, I got to see quite a few different roles that these media specialists play. I saw different teachers who came in and discussed activities with them. I also got to see different versions of teacher/media specialist cooperation. I don't believe I saw true collaboration, but I did see some interaction. I also saw a class that came in to work. The two media specialists don't do anything with check-out, check-in, or shelving as they have a full-time clerk that takes care of all of this. There were several students that came into the MC throughout the day and asked questions, found books, used the computers and printers, and just talked to the MS.
It was very interesting to see the difference between an elementary school that I was used to and a high school. The high school has much less traffic through the media center throughout the day. The traffic it does have seems to be just for socializing and not necessarily for education. However, the classes that came in were so independent. They just grabbed the laptops and got to work. It was pretty amazing to see the difference.

Frank Long Elementary

2:45-5:15PM
Today was another day in the media center after hours. I had a few more people show up this time. One of the restrictions on my time in the MC, however, is that I am not allowed to check out equipment. I can only check out books. So one of the questions that came in was about software. The MS locked the back room where this is housed, so I was not able to help her. However, I did have people come in and use the laminator, the paper cutter, and the ellison cutters again.

Frank Long Elementary

2:45-5:45PM
Today was my first day keeping the media center open for extended hours. I went in to the MC earlier in the day to learn how to check books in and out. It seems like a relatively straightforward process and didn't take me but a few minutes to catch on. The only thing that I made a mental note that I need to pay attention to is whether I have the system on the check in button or the check out button. Everything else was pretty self explanatory.
So I have the media center open and I am prepared. Hardly anyone shows up. I chalked it up to the fact that they only learned about it the day before so no one was prepared to have it open and no one is used to it being open. I did have a couple people come in and use the laminator and the ellison cutters. Hopefully it will be more eventful next week!

Department Meeting

8:30-3:30
Today I attended an AR/RTI meeting with all the media specialists in the county. It was an all-day meeting in which we learned about the AR program and how to guide students from focusing on points to focusing on target percentage (85%) and book levels. The data provided and the suggestions the two lead instructors gave were pretty interesting. I think that if students see how the goals are calculated and how 1 low test grade affect their overall average, they will definitely be more inclined to take their time and do their best.
I also really enjoyed learning about the home school connection side of this program. I think that parents should have the rights to see what tests their child is taking and how they are doing on these test. They can also help encourage their child to do better with this information!
Throughout the day, the instructors not only talked about AR, but also the STAR side of the Renaissance Place program. This program can be used to help students identify their reading level. Teachers can use as often as once a week as a progress monitoring tool for the RTI process.
Overall the day was very interesting and eye-opening. I have used AR as a classroom teacher for 10 years, but was unaware of all the components of AR. I will definitely see this program differently in the future!

Bradwell Institute

3:00-3:30PM
Today I went and met Diana Clark and Miriam Hudson at the media center at Bradwell Institute. I had never even been in the school before, so it was quite interesting to get a "fresh" look at a completely different media center. I think the last time I was in the library at a high school is when I was in high school! It definitely brought back some memories!! :) The way this media center is organized is COMPLETELY different than either the one at my home school and the one at the middle school. It is interesting to see how something that is designed to do the same job can be arranged and run so differently. I really look forward to working with these two ladies. They made me feel right at home already. Since both Mrs. Clark and Mrs. Dunham have both been in the job field for as long as they have, it was very interesting to pick their brains about the changes that have come along in the area of the library. It has become so much more than just a library in their tenure! I am very excited to learning more about their personal histories as time goes on!

Lewis Frasier Middle School

2:45-3:45PM
Today I went and met with Mrs. Sharon Dunham, the media specialist at Lewis Frasier Middle School. I got a tour of the facilities and met the media para as well. I asked her about her collection and she gave me the history of the collection and the media center as a whole since she has been at the school since it opened. She had records dating back to the original orders and set-up of the collection when the school first opened. She is quite organized and hates clutter! It was intersting to already note some of the differences between my home school's media center and this one.

Today is the final day that I can work in the media center for the summer. My media specialist is off until the teachers return to school. Today Dr. Sands taught me how to input information into the automated purchase order system. It seems like a very confusing system, but I am sure once I used it all the time, I would be able to master it. There are so many different accounts that money is put into and comes out of, I would have to be very careful not to mess up and pull from the wrong account. It was a very interesting process to see!
I also helped Dr. Sands organize the media center. We went through some of her cabinets and pulled pretty much everything out to put in its place. We found so many different cords!! We found some that went to computers that had been discarded years ago! We also cleaned out and organized several closets that needed to be purged. The things that we threw away....
Working with Dr. Sands in the media center, even for this very short time, has given me a new sense of respect for all the different hats she has to wear on a daily basis! I got a very small glimpse into her daily routine - I can't imagine how she fits it all in when the teachers are actually in the building!! I can't wait to come back in the fall and complete more hours and get a real sense of the job that she tackles every day!

Today I continued to work on my assignment pertaining to the reference collection. I looked more in depth at the collection as a whole and determined what was missing. I went through the electronic catalog and compared that to the K-5 standards in both social studies and science. I determined there was a great area of weakness in the reference collection and searched to find supplemental online resources for the areas of discrepancy. I have compiled a list of references that can be used to supplement the print resources for each grade level and each standard. These are posted on the blog under "FRIT 7737 Resources". I have also had the media specialist attach them to the school's website for parent use as well. This took quite a while and I will use the information learned to start working on the order that can be created for this section.

Day 2 in the media center brought a new opportunity to look at organization. I studied the organization of the media center by discussing the system with Dr. Sands and also walked the aisles looking for specific sections. I found that this media center is divided into an easy section, a series section, non-fiction, fiction, reference, a teacher's professional section, and class sets. The media center is very easy to navigate. The students can reach all shelves and all books on the shelves. No shelf is too full that it does not allow for removal of books. There is a system in place to keep the books in the correct spot. Students are required to get a shelf marker and put it into the slot on the bookshelf where a book is taken. When the student decides to return that book, he/she knows where to put it. If the student decides to check out the book, he/she will pull the shelf marker. It seems to work very well once the students remember to actually use the markers.
I also paid close attention to the reference section since this is the section I will be using for a practicum assignment that I will complete over the course of my hours. I studied how this section was organized, what types of reference books were included, its accessibility, and its use by students. I saw as I studied that this section is not a very big section. Most of the books that are included are encyclopedias. This section tends to be relatively inaccessible as it is placed behind a laptop area.
Overall, the day was very productive and informative in terms of organization. I enjoyed learning about the placement of books and the reasons for this placement. I also enjoyed delving a little deeper into the inner workings of a media center. It makes me have a different perspective on the workload of a media specialist.

I have started my hours for my media practicum today. I have come in to work today ready to do whatever needs to be done! I am excited to get a taste of what running a media center includes. I worked with Dr. Sands today on completing her end of the year inventory. She also took a few minutes to introduce blogging to me and helped me created this blog site. After she helped me create my blog, I worked with her on more inventory paperwork.
